Dear Heavenly Father,

Praise

David told the men who murdered Ish-bosheth, “As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life out of every adversity…” (2 Sam 4:9). I praise you today as the God who keeps me through the storms and trials of life. How wonderful to serve the One who upholds me with his mighty hand! You are the King of glory, the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! You are the Lord of hosts! (Ps 24:7–10).

Today in Your Word

Today you told me about the murder of Ish-bosheth and David’s coronation ceremony at Hebron. This was the third time David was anointed king: first he was privately anointed by Samuel (1 Sam 16:13), then he was crowned king of Judah (2 Sam 2:4), and finally he was anointed king of all Israel. It had taken almost 20 years for your promise to be fulfilled, and during those years, David waited patiently on you. This teaches me the importance of patience in Christian ministry and the need for preparation before I can be successful in the tasks you have given me. Your promises are worth waiting for, even when your timetable doesn’t match my expectations or desires. David’s success as king was due in no small part to the mighty men who supported him. Within his army were two elite groups: the “Thirty” and the “Three” (2 Sam 23; 1 Chr 11). These men showed bravery in battle as well as wisdom in leadership. This motivates me to seek out strong believers who will hold me accountable and help me be successful in my Christian walk. David inspired his men to achieve the impossible and fulfill their true potential. His example is a model for me to follow in my home, my church, and my community. I want to be an inspiration for godliness to everyone around me!

Reflection

Eleazar, a member of the “Three,” changed the course of an entire battle (2 Sam 23:9–10). He held his ground alongside David, and you gave him a great victory. Am I willing to stand firm when those around me are fleeing the battle?

Request

Father, help me to face my fears head-on and take a stand for you. Give me the courage to defend others from the attacks of the enemy and remain true to your cause.

Thanksgiving

Thank you for the victory that comes when I hold my ground in faith. I know your grace will help me to “be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong” (1 Cor 16:13).

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
