Dear Heavenly Father,

Praise

Moses said, “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he” (Deut 32:4). I praise you today as my Rock, my God of faithfulness. If I forsake you and turn away, you are faithful to rebuke and discipline me. Yet you are also compassionate and merciful, and you will vindicate me if I return and humble myself before you. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised!

Today in Your Word

Today you shared with me the Song of Moses. This song contrasted your faithfulness and purity with the unfaithfulness and perversity of your people. You gave it to them as a prophecy of what would happen in the years to come (Deut 31:16–19). They would prosper from your blessings, and when they were rich and successful, they would turn away from you and serve other gods. When many evils and troubles came upon them for their sin, this song would confront them. It would bear witness to your loyalty and their treachery. This teaches me the importance of songs as an aid to memory. Songs have a tendency to stay with me over the years, and I should use them to instill your truth in my heart and mind (cf. Col 3:16; Eph 5:18–19). The same day Moses gave your song to the Israelites, you told him to prepare for death. He pronounced a prophetic blessing on Israel before he died, and he encouraged them to thank you for what you had done: “Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will trample down their high places” (Deut 33:29 NIV). You led Moses up into the mountains of Moab and showed him the promised land. He died there in your arms, and since then, “No prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face” (Deut 34:10 NIV).

Reflection

Moses told the Israelites again and again that you alone were the source of life and blessing. How often I seek after other things—money, possessions, careers, and relationships. It is only when I seek your Kingdom first that I find true wealth and fulfillment.

Request

Father, I want your song of truth to ring in my heart. Help me to keep my eyes firmly fixed on Jesus, looking away from everything else toward the glory of your precious Son (Heb 12:2).

Thanksgiving

Truly there is no one like you, the God of Israel. You ride across the heavens to help me, across the skies in majestic splendor. You, the eternal God, are my refuge, and underneath are your everlasting arms (Deut 33:26–27). Hallelujah!

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
